Grieving a pet

When the loss of an animal hurts more than people expect.

Losing a pet can hurt as much as losing a person. Animals are part of daily life in a way few people are: every morning, every walk, every evening on the sofa.

Why it hits so hard

  • The loss of unconditional company
  • Your routine disappears overnight
  • You may have made the decision to end their life, and carry that
  • Others may not understand why you are so upset

Things that help

  • Mark the loss: a burial, a photo, a walk on their favourite route
  • Keep a collar or toy if you want to
  • Let yourself cry
  • Wait before getting another animal until you feel ready

Your grief is valid. If you live alone, the silence can be especially hard. Reach out to people, even briefly.

    Men don't have to disappear.

Withdrawal, overwork, anger and numbness are how pain often shows up in men. Disappearing is not the same as coping.
