Grief when you are far from home
Losing someone in another country, or grieving away from your family.
Many people live far from where they grew up. When someone dies back home, distance adds another layer.
What makes it harder
- You may not be able to travel for the funeral
- Time zones and costs complicate everything
- People around you may not have known the person
- Your grief may not fit the customs where you now live
Ways to connect
- Join the funeral by video if possible
- Hold your own small gathering where you are
- Call family regularly, even briefly
- Cook a dish they made, or play music from home
Feeling caught between
Some people feel they belong neither here nor there in grief. That is a real loss too. Find people where you live who share your background, or others who have lived abroad through a loss.
