When a pregnancy ends
Miscarriage, stillbirth and loss in pregnancy, including for partners.
Pregnancy loss is common and often hidden. People may say little because they do not know what to say.
It is a real loss
You lost a baby and a future you had started to imagine. That grief is real, however early it happened.
Partners grieve too
Partners, including men, often focus on supporting the person who was pregnant and put their own grief aside. Many say later that nobody asked how they were. If that is you, your grief deserves room too.
Things that can help
- Name the baby, if that feels right
- Keep something: a scan picture, a card, a small object
- Mark the due date or the anniversary in a way that suits you
- Tell people what you need. Many will not know
Support
Many hospitals and charities offer support after pregnancy loss, for both partners. If you are struggling with anxiety or low mood for weeks afterwards, talk to a doctor.
