Intersex is an umbrella term for people born with sex characteristics, such as chromosomes, hormones or anatomy, that do not fit typical definitions of male or female. It is more common than many people think.
Experiences people describe
- Medical procedures in childhood done without their consent
- Secrecy from families or doctors
- Discovering they are intersex as a teenager or adult
- Shame and isolation
Effects later in life
Some intersex people live with physical pain, trauma from medical care, or difficulty trusting doctors.
What helps
- Intersex led organisations, which offer peer support and information
- Health care that respects consent and choice
- Therapists who understand medical trauma
Being intersex is a natural variation. You deserve respect and control over your own body.
