Coming out to a partner
When you realise something about your identity while in a relationship.
Some people come to understand their sexuality or gender while in a long term relationship. It can be frightening for everyone.
Before you tell them
- Get support for yourself first if you can, from an LGBTQ+ service or counsellor
- Think about your safety if your partner might react badly
- You do not need to have everything figured out
What to expect
Your partner may feel shock, grief, anger, confusion or relief. Their feelings are real. So are yours.
Possible paths
Some couples stay together and change the shape of the relationship. Some separate. Some take time to decide. There is no single right outcome.
Look after each other
If you have children, keep them out of the adult conversations until you know what is happening. Both of you deserve support.
