Abuse in same sex relationships
It happens, and it can have extra layers.
Domestic abuse happens in same sex relationships at similar rates to other relationships.
Extra layers
- Threats to out someone to family, work or community
- Telling a partner no one will help because services are for straight people
- Isolation from a small community where everyone knows each other
- The idea that abuse between two men or two women is just fighting
It is still abuse
Control, fear and harm are abuse whatever the genders involved.
Finding help
Some services specialise in LGBTQ+ people. Many general services also support LGBTQ+ survivors. You can ask before sharing details whether they are inclusive. See resources for your country.
