Pronouns and names: getting it right

For friends, family and colleagues.

Using someone's chosen name and pronouns is a simple way to show respect.

If you are not sure

  • "What pronouns do you use?"
  • Use their name until you know

If you get it wrong

  • Correct yourself briefly and move on: "She, sorry. She said..."
  • Do not make a big apology. It puts pressure on them

In groups

Introduce yourself with your pronouns. It makes it easier for others to share theirs.
