Family rejection
When people who should love you turn away.
Being rejected by family because of your sexuality or gender is one of the deepest hurts.
What it can feel like
- Grief, even though they are alive
- Anger
- Shame, although you have done nothing wrong
- Loneliness, especially at holidays
Chosen family
Many LGBTQ+ people build chosen families: friends and community who become as close as relatives. That is real family.
Sometimes families change
Some families come round over time. Some do not. You can protect yourself while leaving the door open, or close it.
If you have nowhere safe to live, see the housing pieces or a local LGBTQ+ service.
