Losing a child
The loss that turns the natural order upside down.
There are no words that make this smaller. Losing a child, at any age, before birth or as an adult, is among the hardest experiences a person can face.
What people often go through
- Disbelief that can last a long time
- Guilt, even when there was nothing you could have done
- Strain on your relationship, as partners often grieve differently
- Feeling unable to be around other children or families
- A loss of the future you imagined
Fathers' grief
Fathers are often asked how their partner is doing, and not how they are. Many feel they must be the strong one. Your grief is real and matters too.
Finding others
Support groups for bereaved parents exist in many countries. Being with people who have lived it often helps when nothing else does.
If you are struggling to keep going, please use the crisis lines for your country. You do not have to carry this alone.
