Finding an LGBTQ+ affirming therapist

How to check before you start.

A therapist who understands LGBTQ+ lives can make a big difference.

Questions to ask

  • Do you have experience working with LGBTQ+ clients?
  • What training have you had on gender and sexuality?
  • How would you approach my identity in our sessions?

Good signs

  • They do not treat your identity as the problem
  • They use the right language and pronouns
  • They are curious without making you educate them

Warning signs

  • Suggesting your sexuality or gender can or should be changed
  • Making assumptions
  • Being uncomfortable

You can stop seeing a therapist who does not feel right.
