Coming out when you are not sure how people will react
Thinking through who, when and how.
Coming out is personal. There is no right age or right way, and you never owe it to anyone.
Think about safety first
If coming out could put you at risk of violence, losing your home, or losing financial support, it may be safer to wait or build a plan first.
Choosing who to tell first
Many people start with someone they expect to be supportive. Their support can help when telling others.
Ways to do it
- In person, somewhere private
- By message or letter, which gives people time to react
- With a supportive person there
Words to use
- "I want to tell you something important about me. I am gay."
- "I am bisexual. I am telling you because I want you to know me."
- "I am trans, and I would like you to use the name Sam."
After
People may need time. Some reactions improve. Get support for yourself from an LGBTQ+ service or group.
