Homelessness and older people
Losing a home later in life.
Homelessness is often pictured as something that happens to young people. It also happens later in life, sometimes for the first time in someone's sixties or seventies.
How it happens
- A partner dies and the tenancy or income goes with them
- A relationship ends late in life
- Rent rises beyond a pension
- Illness or disability makes a home unmanageable
- Family arrangements break down
Why it is especially hard
Older people may have health problems that make sleeping rough or in shelters dangerous. Many feel deep shame and hide what is happening.
Where to turn
- Housing services, where older age and health can mean priority
- Older people's charities, which often give housing advice
- Social care services, if you need support at home
- Doctors, who can write letters about health needs
If you are worried about someone older
Gently ask how they are managing. Offer to help with phone calls or forms. Many older people find asking for help harder than younger people do.
