Young people leaving home in crisis

When home is no longer safe.

Sometimes home stops being safe. Young people leave because of violence, abuse, family breakdown, or being rejected for who they are.

If you need to leave now

  • Go to a safe adult: a relative, a friend's parent, a teacher
  • Call a youth helpline or homelessness service
  • If you are in danger, call the emergency number for your country

Help that exists

  • Youth homelessness services and hostels
  • Social services for young people at risk
  • School or college support staff
  • LGBTQ+ youth services if you have been rejected for your identity

Avoid

  • People offering a bed in exchange for sex, drugs or favours
  • Staying somewhere you do not feel safe

You did nothing wrong

Leaving an unsafe home is not running away. It is protecting yourself.
