When grief and depression overlap
How to tell the difference, and why it matters.
Grief and depression share many signs: sadness, poor sleep, low energy, losing interest in things. They can also happen together.
Some differences
- In grief, painful feelings often come in waves, mixed with good memories. In depression, low mood is more constant
- In grief, self worth usually stays intact. In depression, people often feel worthless
- In grief, sadness is mostly about the loss. In depression, it spreads to everything
Why it matters
Depression after a loss is common and treatable. Getting help for depression does not mean you are getting over the person. It means you are looking after yourself.
When to talk to someone
- If you feel worthless or hopeless
- If you cannot function for weeks
- If you think about not wanting to be here
Use the crisis lines for your country if you are in danger now.
