Starting over after addiction

Recovery and building a new life.

Recovery from addiction is more than stopping a substance or behaviour. It is building a life worth staying well in.

Building blocks

  • Support: groups, sponsors, counsellors, recovery services
  • Routine and structure
  • New friendships, and sometimes distance from old ones
  • Physical health: sleep, food, movement
  • Purpose: work, volunteering, learning

Handling triggers

Know the people, places and feelings that put you at risk. Plan what to do instead.

Setbacks

Relapse can happen. It does not erase progress. Reach out quickly and start again.
