Loneliness inside a relationship

When you are with someone and still feel alone.

You can share a bed with someone and feel completely alone. It is a common and lonely kind of loneliness.

How it happens

  • Life becomes all logistics: kids, bills, work
  • One or both partners stop sharing what is inside
  • Old hurts build up unspoken
  • Stress, grief or depression take people inward

Small ways back

  • Ten minutes a day without screens, just talking
  • Asking a real question: "What has been on your mind this week?"
  • Doing something new together, however small
  • Saying, "I miss you, even though you are right here."

When it does not shift

Couples counselling can help even if things are not in crisis. It is not a last resort. It can be maintenance.
