Helping a friend with their mental health

What to say and how to stay connected.

If a friend is struggling, you do not need to be an expert. You just need to be there.

Things to say

  • "How are you, really?"
  • "I have noticed you seem down. Do you want to talk?"
  • "I am here. No pressure."

Things to do

  • Keep inviting them to things
  • Do something side by side, like a walk or a drive
  • Help them find support if they want it

Know your limits

You cannot fix it for them. Encourage professional help. If they are in danger, call emergency services.
