Getting your confidence back

After something knocked you down.

Abuse, job loss, illness, failure or trauma can knock confidence to the ground. Things you used to do easily can start to feel impossible.

Confidence follows action

Waiting until you feel confident often means waiting forever. Doing small things first builds confidence.

Steps

  • Pick tasks slightly outside your comfort zone
  • Notice what you did, not just what went wrong
  • Keep a list of things you have handled
  • Spend time with people who value you
  • Learn a new skill, however small

The inner critic

After hard experiences, many people carry a harsh inner voice. Notice when it speaks. Ask whether you would talk to a friend that way.

Get support

Counselling can help when low confidence is rooted in old experiences.
