Why people stay

Answering the question everyone asks, including the person inside.

People often ask, why do they not just leave? The answer is rarely simple.

Common reasons

  • Fear of what the abuser will do
  • Love, and hope they will change
  • Children, and fear of losing them
  • No money or nowhere to go
  • Shame, and fear of not being believed
  • Being worn down until leaving seems impossible
  • Cultural, religious or family pressure
  • Immigration status tied to the partner

For men

Men may also fear being laughed at, not having services, or being seen as the abuser.

No judgement

Staying is not weakness. Leaving takes planning and support. Many people leave and return several times before leaving for good. Each time, they learn something.
