When you are accused of being the abuser

False accusations as a tactic, and what to do.

Some abusers accuse their victims of abuse. This can be a way to frighten, control or gain advantage in court or with family.

How it happens

  • Threatening to call the police and say you hurt them
  • Telling friends and family you are violent
  • Making allegations during custody disputes

What can help

  • Keep records of incidents, messages and threats
  • Stay calm in confrontations if you can, and leave if things escalate
  • Get legal advice early
  • Talk to a domestic abuse service that supports men

A hard truth

Some people who think they are victims are also using harmful behaviour. A good service can help you look honestly at the whole situation.
