Men experience domestic abuse too
Why it happens, why it is hidden, and why it is not your fault.
Domestic abuse is often pictured as something that only happens to women. Men experience it too, from female and male partners, and from family members.
Why men often do not recognise it
- They expect abuse to mean being punched
- They believe men cannot be victims
- They fear nobody will believe them
- They worry about losing their children
- They feel ashamed
What abuse can look like
- Constant criticism and humiliation
- Controlling money, phones or movement
- Threats, including threats to make false allegations
- Physical violence, including pushing, slapping or throwing things
- Sexual coercion
- Using children as leverage
It is not your fault
Nothing you did made it acceptable. You deserve safety and support.
