Talking to your children about leaving

Words for children when the family has to move.

When you leave an abusive home, children need simple, honest explanations that fit their age.

Example words

  • "We are going to stay somewhere new for a while, so we can all feel safe."
  • "This is not your fault."
  • "It is OK to love both of us."
  • "You can ask me anything."

What to avoid

  • Sharing adult details
  • Asking children to keep big secrets
  • Criticising the other parent in front of them

Support for them

Many domestic abuse services have children's workers. Schools can help if they know.
