Children who see abuse at home

How children are affected, and what helps them.

Children living with domestic abuse are affected even if they are not hurt directly.

How it can affect them

  • Fear, anxiety and trouble sleeping
  • Problems at school
  • Anger or withdrawal
  • Feeling responsible
  • Learning that violence is normal

What helps

  • Safety first. Getting away from abuse is often the biggest help
  • A safe, calm adult who listens
  • Telling them it is not their fault
  • Keeping routines where possible
  • Specialist support for children, which many services offer

You are not a bad parent

If you are being abused, you are doing your best in an impossible situation. Asking for help protects your children too.
