Supporting someone who might be suicidal
Asking directly, and what to do next.
If you are worried someone is thinking about suicide, the most important thing is to ask.
Asking does not put the idea in their head
Asking directly can be a relief for the other person.
Words to use
- "Are you thinking about suicide?"
- "Are you thinking about ending your life?"
If they say yes
- Stay calm and listen
- Do not promise to keep it secret
- Ask if they have a plan
- Help them contact a crisis line or emergency services
- Remove things they could use, if safe
Look after yourself
Supporting someone in crisis is hard. Talk to someone afterwards about how you are.
Find crisis lines at help for your country.
