Supporting a friend who is being abused
How to help without making it more dangerous.
If you think a friend or family member is being abused, you might want to rescue them. Patience and support usually help more.
Do
- Listen and believe them
- Tell them it is not their fault
- Respect their decisions, even if you disagree
- Help them find information about services
- Keep in touch
Avoid
- Confronting the abuser
- Ultimatums
- Criticising them for staying
- Sharing what they told you without permission
Emergencies
If they are in immediate danger, call emergency services.
Many helplines also support friends and family who are worried about someone.
