Starting again after a health diagnosis

When illness changes your plans.

A serious diagnosis can change your plans overnight: work, money, relationships, and how you see yourself.

What people often feel

  • Shock and disbelief
  • Fear about the future
  • Grief for the life you expected
  • Anger
  • Relief, if it finally explains symptoms

What helps

  • Information from trusted sources, such as your care team and recognised health charities
  • Writing down questions before appointments
  • Bringing someone with you
  • Support groups for people with the same condition

Adjusting goals

You may need to change how you work, what you do, or how fast. That is adapting, not giving up.

Mental health

Low mood and anxiety after a diagnosis are common. Tell your care team. Support is part of treatment.
