How to talk to a doctor about your mental health

What to say when you have ten minutes and do not know where to start.

Many people go to the doctor and talk about a bad back when they really mean, I am not coping.

Before you go

Write down:

  • What you have been feeling
  • How long it has been going on
  • How it affects sleep, work, eating and relationships
  • Any thoughts of harming yourself

Opening words

  • "I am here because I have not been feeling right in myself."
  • "I think I might be depressed."
  • "I am struggling and I do not really know what is wrong."

Ask

  • What are my options?
  • Is there talking therapy available?
  • What happens next?

You can bring someone with you. You can also ask for a longer appointment.
