Grief at work

Going back, what to say, and what you do not owe anyone.

Going back to work after a loss can feel strange. Some people find it a relief. Others find it unbearable.

Before you go back

  • Ask your manager to tell colleagues, so you do not have to repeat it
  • Say how you would like it handled: talk about it, or not
  • Ask about leave, flexible hours or a phased return if they exist where you work

At work

  • Have a place you can go if it hits you
  • Lower your expectations of yourself for a while
  • Write things down. Grief affects memory
  • Take breaks

What you do not owe

You do not owe anyone the details. You can say, "Thank you, I would rather not talk about it at work." You do not have to look fine.

The free course Carrying it at work is being written for this.
