Drinking to get through it
When alcohol or something else becomes the way to switch off. A plain look at what is happening.
After something painful, a drink can feel like the only thing that turns the noise down. It works, for a few hours. That is why it is easy to lean on.
How it can turn
- You need more to get the same effect
- You drink to sleep, then sleep badly
- Mornings are harder, and anxiety is worse the next day
- You hide how much you drink
- People close to you mention it
None of this makes you a bad person. It often means you are carrying more than you have help for.
Questions worth asking yourself
- What am I trying not to feel when I drink?
- What happens on the days I do not?
- Has anyone I trust said they are worried?
Steps you can take
- Count honestly for a week, without judging
- Have alcohol free days, and notice what comes up on them
- Talk to a doctor. Stopping suddenly after heavy drinking can be dangerous, so get medical advice before you stop
- Look for support for both the drinking and what is underneath it
