Depression in men often looks like something else
Anger, overwork, drinking and numbness can all be signs.
Depression is often described as sadness and crying. In many men, it shows up differently, which means it is missed.
Signs that are often overlooked
- Irritability and short temper
- Working all the time, or not being able to work at all
- Drinking more or using drugs
- Taking risks
- Feeling numb or empty rather than sad
- Physical aches, headaches, stomach trouble
- Pulling away from people
Why it matters
When depression is not recognised, people do not get help. Some end up in crisis.
What to do
If several of these sound familiar, talk to a doctor. You can say, "I have not been myself, and I think it might be depression."
If you are thinking about ending your life, use the crisis lines for your country now.
