Clearing out after a loss

Belongings, homes, and when to do it.

Sorting through someone's belongings after they die is one of the most emotional jobs there is.

No rush

Unless there is a tenancy or sale deadline, take your time. Some people need weeks. Some need years.

Ways to approach it

  • Do it with someone who knew them
  • Start with easy rooms or items
  • Make piles: keep, give, donate, recycle
  • Keep a few meaningful items
  • Take photos of things you cannot keep

Disagreements

Families often argue over belongings. Talk early about what matters to each person.

Feelings

Smells, handwriting and clothes can bring grief back strongly. Take breaks.
