Abuse and immigration

When your visa or status is used against you.

Some people are told by their abuser that they will be deported, or lose their children, if they leave or tell anyone.

Common threats

  • Taking or hiding passports and documents
  • Threatening to report someone to immigration
  • Saying no service will help someone without status

What to know

  • Rules differ by country, but in many places there are protections for people experiencing abuse
  • Services can often help regardless of immigration status
  • An immigration lawyer or advice service can explain your options

Do not let threats stop you from seeking confidential advice.
