When to see a clinician about trauma
How to know when self help is not enough, and what to say when you call.
Many people manage trauma with support from friends, routines and time. Sometimes that is not enough, and that is nothing to be ashamed of.
Signs it is time
- Flashbacks, nightmares or panic happen often
- You cannot work, sleep, or look after yourself properly
- You are drinking or using drugs to cope
- Relationships are breaking down
- You have thoughts of hurting yourself or not wanting to be here
- It has been months and things are not easing
What to say
You do not need the right words. You could say:
- "Something happened in my past and I think it is affecting my health."
- "I have been having nightmares and panic, and I want help."
- "I do not want to talk about details yet, but I need support."
What to ask
- Do you have experience with trauma?
- What kinds of treatment do you offer?
- Can we go at my pace?
If you are in crisis now, use the crisis lines for your country.
