What a trauma informed service should feel like
How to tell whether a service will treat you well.
Not every service gets this right. It is fair to look for one that does.
Signs of a good fit
- They explain what will happen before it happens
- They ask before touching, recording or sharing anything
- They do not push you to tell your story before you are ready
- They let you have a say in how things go
- They take you seriously, whoever you are
- You leave feeling more in control, not less
For men and LGBTQ+ people
Some services were built mainly with women in mind. Many now support men and LGBTQ+ people well, but it is worth asking directly:
- Do you support men who have been through this?
- Have your staff worked with gay, bisexual or trans clients?
- Can I choose the gender of the person I speak to?
If it is not right
You can stop and look elsewhere. One bad experience does not mean help is not out there. The Resource Finder lists services by country.
