Trans people and healthcare

Getting care that respects you.

Trans people often face barriers in healthcare, from long waits for specialist care to being misgendered in routine appointments.

Tips for appointments

  • Bring someone with you
  • Write down what you need before you go
  • Ask for your name and pronouns to be recorded
  • Ask questions if you do not understand

Your rights

In many countries, health services must not discriminate because of gender identity.

If you experience discrimination

Write down what happened. Make a complaint if safe. Advocacy groups can help.

Mental health

Long waits and discrimination can affect wellbeing. Find support from trans led services and peers.
