The first thirty days of starting over

A gentle plan for when everything has changed.

Whether it is after a loss, a breakup, prison, hospital or leaving abuse, the first month of a new chapter can feel shapeless.

Week one: steady

  • Somewhere safe to sleep
  • Food in the cupboard
  • One person who knows where you are

Week two: basics

  • Sort essential paperwork: ID, bank, benefits if needed
  • Set a regular wake time
  • Get outside every day

Week three: connect

  • Reach out to one old friend
  • Find one group or place to go regularly

Week four: look ahead

  • Write down one small goal for the next month
  • Notice what has gone better than expected

Go at your own pace. Some weeks will take longer.

    Men can be victims.

Sexual and intimate partner violence against men is common, underreported, and too often met with disbelief.
