Technology and abuse

Tracking, monitoring and online harassment, and how to protect yourself.

Abusers increasingly use technology to control and frighten partners.

How it can happen

  • Location sharing on phones
  • Hidden tracking apps or devices
  • Access to email, social media or cloud accounts
  • Smart home devices
  • Threats to share intimate images

Steps to consider

  • Check which devices and accounts are shared
  • Change passwords from a device the abuser has not touched
  • Turn off location sharing
  • Check car and bags for trackers if you are concerned

Take care

Suddenly cutting off access can alert an abuser and increase risk. A domestic abuse service can help you plan the safest order of steps.
