Self harm

Understanding it, and finding other ways to cope.

Self harm means hurting yourself on purpose, often as a way to cope with overwhelming feelings.

Why people do it

  • To release pressure
  • To feel something when numb
  • To punish themselves
  • To feel in control

Men self harm too

Self harm in men may look like punching walls, picking fights, or reckless risk taking.

Other ways to cope

  • Hold ice in your hand
  • Exercise hard for a few minutes
  • Tear paper, shout into a pillow
  • Talk to someone

Getting help
