Rough sleeping and health

Looking after yourself while sleeping outside.

Sleeping outside harms health quickly. Getting off the street is the priority, but meanwhile you deserve care.

Day to day

  • Use day centres for food, showers, laundry and advice
  • Keep layers of clothing and stay dry
  • Drink water
  • Keep your feet dry and change socks

Health care

  • Many places have health services for people without homes
  • You can usually see a doctor even without an address
  • Get any injury, infection or cough checked

Safety

  • Sleep near others you trust or in well lit places
  • Keep valuables hidden
  • Outreach teams can help with safer options

Next steps

Ask outreach workers about emergency accommodation and longer term housing.

    Men can be victims.

Sexual and intimate partner violence against men is common, underreported, and too often met with disbelief.
