Retirement as a fresh start

Making the most of the next chapter.

Retirement is often sold as freedom. For many, it is also a shock: no structure, fewer people, and a sense of being no longer needed.

Common challenges

  • Losing a work identity
  • Missing colleagues
  • Days without shape
  • Changes in a relationship when you are both home

Ideas that help

  • Keep a routine with a reason to get up
  • Volunteer or mentor
  • Learn something new
  • Join groups, clubs or men's sheds
  • Set health goals

Talk about it

If retirement brings low mood or drinking more, talk to someone. It is common and it can change.
