Repairs and damp

Getting your landlord to fix problems.

Damp, mould, leaks and broken heating are not just uncomfortable. They can affect your health, especially breathing.

Steps

  1. Report the problem to your landlord in writing, by email or letter
  2. Take dated photos
  3. Keep copies of every message
  4. Give a reasonable time for repairs

If nothing happens

  • Contact your local authority or housing regulator
  • Get advice from a housing advice service
  • Ask a doctor to note any health effects

Things you can do meanwhile

  • Open windows and use extractor fans if you have them
  • Dry clothes outside if possible
  • Wipe condensation

Avoid

Withholding rent without advice can put your home at risk. Get advice first.
