Recovery is not a straight line

Good days, bad days, and why setbacks are normal.

Recovery from mental health problems rarely goes in a straight line.

What it is really like

  • Good weeks followed by bad days
  • Old symptoms coming back under stress
  • Progress that is hard to see day to day

Setbacks are normal

A bad week does not erase your progress. It is part of the process.

Ways to notice progress

  • Keep a simple diary
  • Compare yourself to where you were months ago, not yesterday
  • Ask someone close what they have noticed

Keep going. Things can and do improve.

    Men don't have to disappear.

Withdrawal, overwork, anger and numbness are how pain often shows up in men. Disappearing is not the same as coping.
