Protection orders explained
A general guide to legal protection, which works differently in each country.
Many countries have court orders that can protect people from abuse. Names and rules differ widely, so treat this as a general guide.
What they can do
- Stop someone contacting or approaching you
- Require them to leave a shared home
- Set rules about contact with children
How to get one
Usually through a court, sometimes with help from the police or a domestic abuse service. In some places there is emergency protection available quickly.
What to know
- Breaking an order is often a criminal offence
- An order does not guarantee safety, so keep a safety plan
- Legal aid may be available
Get advice from a local domestic abuse service or lawyer about how it works where you live.
