Moving into your first home after homelessness
Making it feel like home.
Getting the keys to a place of your own after homelessness is a huge moment. It can also be overwhelming.
First week
- Set up gas, electricity and water in your name
- Register for council tax or local fees if they apply
- Find out bin days and how to contact the landlord
- Get a few basics: bedding, a kettle, a pan, a plate
Furnishing
Charities, community furniture projects and local groups often provide free or cheap furniture and appliances.
Keep support in place
The first months are when tenancies are most at risk. Keep in touch with support workers. Ask about tenancy support services.
The quiet
After shelters or the street, a quiet flat can feel lonely. Plan regular contact with people and keep busy.
Make it yours
Small things help it feel like home: a plant, a picture, your own routine.
