Landlord harassment

When a landlord makes your life difficult.

A landlord is allowed to manage their property. They are not allowed to frighten you out of your home.

What harassment can look like

  • Coming into your home without notice
  • Cutting off water, gas or electricity
  • Changing locks while you are out
  • Threats, shouting or abuse
  • Removing your belongings
  • Refusing repairs to force you out

What to do

  • Keep a diary of every incident with dates and times
  • Save messages and take photos
  • Tell the landlord in writing that the behaviour must stop, if safe
  • Contact a housing advice service or local authority

If you are locked out or threatened

In many places, illegal eviction is a crime. Call the police if you are threatened or locked out. Get advice straight away.

You still have rights

Even if you owe rent, there is usually a legal process a landlord must follow. Rules vary by country, so check locally.
