How to tell someone you trust
If you want one person to know, how to start, and how much to say.
You do not have to tell anyone. But many people find that telling one safe person lightens things.
Choosing who
Pick someone who has been kind to you before, who does not gossip, and who is not part of what happened. It does not have to be the closest person in your life.
Choosing when
Somewhere private, when neither of you is rushed. Some people find it easier side by side: in a car, on a walk.
What to say
You can decide how much to share. For example:
- "There is something from my past I have never told anyone. I do not want to go into detail. I just want you to know."
- "Something happened to me and it still affects me. I am telling you because I trust you."
- "I am not asking you to fix anything. I just need you to listen."
If it does not go well
Sometimes people react badly because they are shocked, or do not know what to say. That says more about them than about you. You can stop the conversation at any time.
If it goes well, notice how that feels. That is worth remembering.
