Staying safe after leaving
The risks that come after the relationship ends.
Leaving does not always end the abuse. Some abusers escalate when they lose control.
Things to consider
- Change locks if they had keys
- Tell neighbours and work, if safe and appropriate
- Change routines and routes
- Check devices and accounts again
- Keep copies of any orders with you
Contact through children
If you share children, handovers can be risky. Ask about supervised handover services, or arrange handovers in public places.
Look after your recovery
Many people feel relief and grief, freedom and fear at once. Support continues to be available after you leave.
