Psychosis: what it is and what to do
When someone loses touch with reality.
Psychosis is when someone loses some contact with reality. It can be frightening for the person and those around them.
Signs
- Hearing or seeing things others do not
- Strong beliefs that are not based in reality
- Confused thinking or speech
- Withdrawing from others
Causes
Psychosis can be linked to mental health conditions, drugs, extreme stress, sleep loss or physical illness.
What to do
- Stay calm and do not argue about their beliefs
- Help them get medical help quickly
- If they are at risk of harm, call emergency services
Early treatment makes a real difference.
