Obsessive thoughts and compulsions

When the mind gets stuck in loops.

Obsessive compulsive disorder involves unwanted thoughts that cause distress, and actions done to try to ease that distress.

Examples

  • Fear of contamination and repeated washing
  • Fear of harm and repeated checking
  • Disturbing thoughts that feel out of character, with mental rituals to cancel them

What is important to know

Having a disturbing thought does not mean you want to act on it. In fact, the distress shows it goes against your values.

Treatment

Specific talking therapies are effective. Medication can help too. Talk to a doctor.
