Housing after prison
Finding somewhere to live after release.
Having somewhere stable to live is one of the strongest foundations for a new start after prison. It is also one of the hardest things to arrange.
Plan before release
- Ask prison staff, probation or a resettlement worker about housing as early as you can
- Find out whether you can return to where you lived before
- Ask whether any licence or parole conditions affect where you can live
- Get your ID and bank account sorted before release if possible
Options
- Approved or supported accommodation
- Social housing, if you qualify
- Charities that specialise in housing people leaving prison
- Staying with family, if that is safe and allowed
If you are released with nowhere to go
Go to the local housing authority on the day of release and explain your situation. Tell your probation officer. Do not wait.
Disclosure
Some landlords will ask about convictions. Support services can help you think about how and when to talk about your past.
You are allowed a fresh start.
